1984 — Samuel, Mary and their son Jonathan have just settled with their mobile home in the countryside near the small town. It was autumn.

1984 — Samuel, Mary et leur fils Jonathan viennent de s’installer avec leur mobile home dans la campagne près de la petite ville. C’était l’automne.

Samuel and Mary met through acquaintances in another State. They were in their middle 30s when they married. Their son was born the next year. Both were relatively quiet and discreet. They were attending the local churches like the others.

Samuel et Mary se sont rencontrés par l’intermédiaire d’amis communs dans un autre État. Ils avaient tous deux la trentaine lorsqu’ils se sont mariés. Leur fils est né l’année suivante. Tous deux étaient relativement calmes et discrets. Ils fréquentaient les églises locales comme les autres.

The inhabitants were happy with the new couple in their hometown. They spoke with them several times and took time to introduce them to the region. But it was a facade. Unbeknownst to Samuel and Mary, inhabitants were in fact fearful. The fact was that Samuel and Mary were welcomed as a means to forget the troubles a few months ago.

Les habitants étaient heureux d’accueillir ce nouveau couple dans leur ville natale. Ils leur ont parlé à plusieurs reprises et ont pris le temps de leur faire découvrir la région. Mais ce n’était qu’une façade. À l’insu de Samuel et Mary, les habitants étaient en réalité effrayés. En réalité, Samuel et Mary avaient été accueillis afin d’oublier les troubles qui avaient eu lieu quelques mois auparavant.

Like in many small towns people kept appearances on the outside while struggling at home. Several people in the towns were jobless for years. Several were alcoholics. Drug dealing was slowly growing with people coming from the big city. And more concerning for everyone : five murders occurred between 1982 and 1984, and three people disappeared during the same period.

Comme dans beaucoup de petites villes, les gens gardaient les apparences à l’extérieur tout en luttant chez eux. Plusieurs habitants étaient au chômage depuis des années. Plusieurs étaient alcooliques. Le trafic de drogue se développait lentement avec l’arrivée de personnes venues de la grande ville. Et plus inquiétant encore pour tout le monde : cinq meurtres ont été commis entre 1982 et 1984, et trois personnes ont disparu pendant la même période.

The message was clear for everyone : do not talk of this to Samuel and Mary. The couple is gentle, both of them are hard workers and they have a son. We need more people like them. The mayor in person took time to meet them and convince them to move their mobile home closer to the town. They refused because the land here was cheap, something that made the mayor worried.

Le message était clair pour tout le monde : n’en parlez pas à Samuel et Mary. Le couple est gentil, tous deux sont des travailleurs acharnés et ils ont un fils. Nous avons besoin de plus de gens comme eux. Le maire en personne a pris le temps de les rencontrer et de les convaincre de rapprocher leur mobile home de la ville. Ils ont refusé parce que le terrain ici était bon marché, ce qui inquiétait le maire.

Clara, Alice and Rebecca were each around 10 years old. Born the same year. The girls were walking, chatting and playing together. At this time, the town was struggling with debts and growing joblessness. The local textile factory closed the previous year. No one really cared for them when they were playing at night and alone. Their bodies were found in the morning, lying on a nearby countryside side. The local police officer was deeply shocked by what was done to them. Despite some assistance from another police department, no one was convicted or even suspected.

Clara, Alice et Rebecca avaient toutes environ 10 ans. Elles étaient nées la même année. Les filles marchaient, discutaient et jouaient ensemble. Samuel and Mary were happy. Jonathan was well and kind. But they had problems too. Especially with what they call the “black box” deeply hidden in the mobile-home. Samuel and Mary were in extreme difficulty in the past. Two years in jail for Samuel in 1978. Mary was arrested as a prostitute and substance user in 1977, 1978 and again in 1979. They met through a rehab program and made a promise to never speak again of the past, and to never speak of “the Figure” — a deep concern for them psychologically in the small black box.

Samuel et Mary étaient heureux. Jonathan était en bonne santé et gentil. Mais ils avaient aussi des problèmes. Notamment avec ce qu’ils appellent la « boîte noire », profondément cachée dans leur mobile home. Samuel et Mary avaient connu des moments extrêmement difficiles dans le passé. Samuel a passé deux ans en prison en 1978. Mary a été arrêtée pour prostitution et consommation de drogue en 1977, 1978 et à nouveau en 1979. Ils se sont rencontrés dans le cadre d’un programme de désintoxication et se sont promis de ne plus jamais parler du passé, ni de « la Figure », une source profonde d’inquiétude psychologique pour eux, cachée dans la petite boîte noire.

Samuel was working as a plumber. Mary was doing menial jobs to assist Samuel. Jonathan was with her the whole day. Coworkers noticed that Samuel was a bit too clean and serious. Everyone was able to sense that Samuel made his best to speak a few while letting others speak. Mary was not at rest. While speaking of clothes with other female colleagues, she was unable to resist and made a revealing joke about intimacy. Her colleague laughed, but she discussed the matter with the others.

Samuel travaillait comme plombier. Mary effectuait des tâches subalternes pour aider Samuel. Jonathan était avec elle toute la journée. Les collègues ont remarqué que Samuel était un peu trop propre et sérieux. Tout le monde sentait que Samuel faisait de son mieux pour parler peu et laisser les autres s’exprimer. Mary n’était pas tranquille. Alors qu’elle parlait de vêtements avec d’autres collègues féminines, elle n’a pas pu s’empêcher de faire une blague suggestive sur l’intimité. Sa collègue a ri, mais elle en a discuté avec les autres.

Samuel was the first one to be approached after his work. Alan, a laid off worker from the past textile factory, approached him in the street. Alan was guided by others. Everyone felt something with Samuel and they were willing to confirm their doubts. The watchers on the other side of the street looked distantly at the pair. They talked for a few minutes, then moved. Alan walked to the small bar and told the news to the others — He accepted the offer. Mary was the next one. The job was more subtle. A colleague pretended jokingly that she was sometimes “assisting men” on demand. It was too much for Mary’s curiosity, and she asked questions. And Mary’s questions were too much for a colleague. The pair was in deep trouble.

Samuel fut le premier à être abordé après son travail. Alan, un ancien employé licencié de l’usine textile, l’aborda dans la rue. Alan avait été guidé par d’autres. Tout le monde ressentait quelque chose à propos de Samuel et ils étaient prêts à confirmer leurs doutes. Les observateurs de l’autre côté de la rue regardaient le duo de loin. Ils discutèrent quelques minutes, puis s’éloignèrent. Alan s’est rendu dans un petit bar et a annoncé la nouvelle aux autres : il avait accepté l’offre. Mary a été la suivante. Le travail était plus subtil. Une collègue a prétendu en plaisantant qu’elle « aidait parfois les hommes » à la demande. Cela a éveillé la curiosité de Mary, qui a posé des questions. Et les questions de Mary ont été de trop pour sa collègue. Le duo s’est retrouvé dans une situation très délicate.

And Jonathan ? He was extremely curious and playful like many other kids of his age. When people looked at him, Mary noticed that people were more and more concerned.

One night, Samuel left the mobile-home. Mary was deeply surprised. Why did he leave ? Samuel explained that it was a planned work for a colleague. He kissed her and left her alone with Jonathan. Upon his arrival in the hometown, Samuel walked into the local bar as expected. He was guided to a room in the back. He was surprised and shocked : the major and the police officer were here. It was impossible to move back — The game is over Samuel.

Une nuit, Samuel quitta le mobile-home. Mary fut très surprise. Pourquoi était-il parti ? Samuel lui expliqua qu’il s’agissait d’un travail prévu pour un collègue. Il l’embrassa et la laissa seule avec Jonathan. À son arrivée dans sa ville natale, Samuel entra dans le bar local comme prévu. On le conduisit dans une pièce à l’arrière. Il fut surpris et choqué : le maire et le policier étaient là. Il était impossible de faire marche arrière. « La partie est terminée, Samuel. »

In 1982, when the town was struggling, an agreement had to be found to stop the alcohol and drug hemorrhage that was planing families and the town. The drug dealer was not hard to spot : he came into the town aboard a beautiful Mustang. He was found dead the next morning. The Mustang was left untouched in the street. Who retaliated ? No one knows but five bodies were left in the next few years.

En 1982, alors que la ville était en difficulté, il fallait trouver un accord pour mettre fin à l’hémorragie d’alcool et de drogue qui détruisait les familles et la ville. Le trafiquant de drogue n’était pas difficile à repérer : il arrivait en ville à bord d’une magnifique Mustang. Il a été retrouvé mort le lendemain matin. La Mustang a été laissée intacte dans la rue. Qui a riposté ? Personne ne le sait, mais cinq corps ont été retrouvés au cours des années suivantes.

The mayor told Samuel that “The Figure” came to the town a few years ago. He was pompous and pretentious : near dealing his drug in front of the police. His nickname came from its own habit of playing newspaper games. When he was knocked to the ground while drunk, and brought outside the outskirts of the town, he insisted a lot on a man named “Samuel” that was behind his drug trade. An important person said “The Figure” to the mayor and the police officer — someone whose habit was to listen a lot and who physically matched the “1984 Samuel” in the back of the bar that night. The police officer took the lead — You are going back to your mobile home for the last time.

Le maire a dit à Samuel que « The Figure » était arrivé en ville il y a quelques années. Il était pompeux et prétentieux : il vendait sa drogue presque sous le nez de la police. Son surnom venait de son habitude de jouer à des jeux dans les journaux. Lorsqu’il a été assommé alors qu’il était ivre et emmené à la périphérie de la ville, il a beaucoup insisté sur un homme nommé « Samuel » qui était derrière son trafic de drogue. Une personne importante, a déclaré « The Figure » au maire et au policier, quelqu’un qui avait l’habitude d’écouter beaucoup et qui correspondait physiquement au « Samuel de 1984 » qui se trouvait à l’arrière du bar cette nuit-là. Le policier a pris les devants : « Vous retournez dans votre mobile home pour la dernière fois. »

The mobile home was found empty of its inhabitants two days later when Joshua — Samuel’s employer — came to check if everything was fine. Samuel, Mary and Jonathan were never heard of again. Everything was left : TV, clothes, even some money… And a black box was open and empty on the ground. John left and called the police. Nothing much was found the next few months. The town was quiet again.

Le mobile home a été retrouvé vide deux jours plus tard, lorsque Joshua, l’employeur de Samuel, est venu vérifier que tout allait bien. Samuel, Mary et Jonathan n’ont plus jamais donné signe de vie. Tout avait été laissé sur place : la télévision, les vêtements, même de l’argent… Et une boîte noire était ouverte et vide sur le sol. Joshua est parti et a appelé la police. Rien de particulier n’a été découvert au cours des mois suivants. La ville a retrouvé son calme.
