Somewhere, in an undefined year, two men and a woman crossed the border. Their banishment a decade ago has ended. They are going back to their home country. It’s summer. They are walking across fields. The wheat will be abundant this year.

Quelque part, au cours d’une année indéterminée, deux hommes et une femme traversèrent la frontière. Leur exil, qui a duré dix ans, est terminé. Ils rentrent dans leur pays natal. C’est l’été. Ils marchent à travers champs. La récolte de blé sera abondante cette année.

The three figures were standing in front of them. Their faces were severe. The speech was harsh. But ultimately : they were allowed to move forward across the border.

Les trois personnages se tenaient devant eux. Leurs visages étaient sévères. Le discours était dur. Mais finalement, ils ont été autorisés à passer la frontière.

Aliénor, Aymon and Géraud are walking together, side by side. Aliénor was a waitress in this country before her sentence to banishment a decade ago. Aymon was a peasant among others. Geraud was a black-smith. They are walking silently, feeling uncertain about their fate in this country that has forgotten them a long time ago.

Aliénor, Aymon et Géraud marchent côte à côte. Aliénor était serveuse dans ce pays avant d’être condamnée à l’exil il y a dix ans. Aymon était un paysan parmi d’autres. Géraud était forgeron. Ils marchent en silence, incertains de leur sort dans ce pays qui les a oubliés depuis longtemps.

Our three friends were summoned together in front of a local court to answer several questions. Aliénor remembered the old man from the village — …for your concern and your well-being, present your excuse to the people here…

Nos trois amis ont été convoqués ensemble devant un tribunal local pour répondre à plusieurs questions. Aliénor se souvenait du vieil homme du village — …pour votre bien-être et votre tranquillité d’esprit, présentez vos excuses aux personnes présentes ici…

Two people standing on the side of the road were watching our three friends. They remained silent for a while. Their faces changed suddenly when they recognized the three people. Geraud turned his head toward them. He instantly recognized the young woman — she was a young girl a decade earlier. Her words hit him deeply at the time — …did you seriously believe that no one noticed where you were going at night…

Deux personnes debout sur le bord de la route observaient nos trois amis. Elles restèrent silencieuses pendant un moment. Leurs visages changèrent soudainement lorsqu’elles reconnurent les trois personnes. Geraud tourna la tête vers elles. Il reconnut instantanément la jeune femme — c’était une jeune fille dix ans plus tôt. Ses paroles l’avaient profondément marqué à l’époque — … croyais-tu sérieusement que personne ne remarquait où tu allais la nuit…

At one point, our three friends were facing the fortified entrance of the small market town. They noticed a small crowd of people trading food and other goods. Two soldiers with their pikes on the left. Aymon started to worry when he noticed a couple buying bread from a merchant — …no matter how close it looked, Aymon was always a mile gone…

À un moment donné, nos trois amis se trouvaient face à l’entrée fortifiée de la petite ville marchande. Ils remarquèrent un petit groupe de personnes qui échangeaient de la nourriture et d’autres marchandises. Deux soldats armés de piques se tenaient à gauche. Aymon commença à s’inquiéter lorsqu’il remarqua un couple qui achetait du pain à un marchand… Même si cela semblait évident, Aymon était toujours à mille lieues de là…

At the trial a decade earlier, the crowd was extremely violent to the point soldiers were asked for reinforcement within the courtroom. Geraud was fearful and froze. Aliénor responded back to the crowd. Aymon was watching silently. The old man was smiling.

Lors du procès dix ans plus tôt, la foule avait été extrêmement violente, au point que des soldats avaient dû être appelés en renfort dans la salle d’audience. Géraud était terrifié et paralysé. Aliénor répondit à la foule. Aymon observait en silence. Le vieil homme souriait.

Our three friends had first to move to the mayoral house. It was a requirement from the three figures at the border. Each of them received a small paper to present to the local representatives.

Nos trois amis ont d’abord dû se rendre à la mairie. C’était une exigence des trois personnages à la frontière. Chacun d’eux a reçu un petit papier à présenter aux représentants locaux.

Aliénor was a complex and difficult woman back in time. At 25, she had already rebutted four men — perhaps five — and it was known that intimacy was refused to at least two other men. Frustration and resentment was growing in the community. The more people were willing to introduce her to specific men, the more she was talking with other ones. She was a bit too proud of the disorder she was causing around her. It was going to explode at a point or another.

Aliénor était une femme complexe et difficile à son époque. À 25 ans, elle avait déjà repoussé quatre hommes, voire cinq, et on savait qu’elle avait refusé d’avoir des relations intimes avec au moins deux autres hommes. La frustration et le ressentiment grandissaient au sein de la communauté. Plus les gens étaient disposés à lui présenter des hommes en particulier, plus elle discutait avec d’autres. Elle était un peu trop fière du désordre qu’elle provoquait autour d’elle. Cela allait finir par exploser à un moment ou à un autre.

Aymon was a naive and kind man. Women were interested in fact, but he barely understood them. He did his best to interest them kindly with them but every time the romance faded away. Women were playing a game at his expense, unbeknownst to him. But Aymon was playing a game too on his side. Every week, he was moving to the next town under false pretense and stopped at a farm on his fake trip. It was a farm owned by two women. He met them during summer work. The three became “closely associated” as they humoristically described the situation between themselves. It could have continued for a long time if a woman of the community hadn’t spotted the three in a nearby forest.

Aymon était un homme naïf et gentil. Les femmes s’intéressaient à lui, mais il les comprenait à peine. Il faisait de son mieux pour les intéresser gentiment, mais à chaque fois, la romance s’évanouissait. Les femmes jouaient un jeu à ses dépens, à son insu. Mais Aymon jouait aussi un jeu de son côté. Chaque semaine, il déménageait dans la ville voisine sous un faux prétexte et s’arrêtait dans une ferme au cours de son faux voyage. C’était une ferme appartenant à deux femmes. Il les avait rencontrées pendant un travail d’été. Les trois étaient devenus « très proches », comme ils décrivaient la situation entre eux avec humour. Cela aurait pu durer longtemps si une femme de la communauté n’avait pas repéré les trois dans une forêt voisine.

Geraud was barely interesting for the women of the community despite his skills — gossip at the beginning turned into public mockery. He was extremely shy in fact. It was an older woman of the community that noticed him. She deeply appreciated her blacksmith works. What was at first glance one night shared together became a secret ritual. Until some young girls of the community started to follow in his footsteps at night.

Geraud n’intéressait guère les femmes de la communauté malgré ses talents — les commérages du début se transformèrent en moqueries publiques. Il était en fait extrêmement timide. C’est une femme plus âgée de la communauté qui le remarqua. Elle appréciait profondément son travail de forgeron. Ce qui n’était au premier abord qu’une nuit passée ensemble devint un rituel secret. Jusqu’à ce que certaines jeunes filles de la communauté commencent à suivre ses traces la nuit.

At the mayoral house, our three friends were not well received — …banished, banished… muttered the officer in the room. He put his signature on the three papers and asked them to act quietly and to avoid “past disorders” for their own good.

À la mairie, nos trois amis ne furent pas bien accueillis — « …bannis, bannis… » marmonna l’officier présent dans la pièce. Il apposa sa signature sur les trois documents et leur demanda d’agir discrètement et d’éviter les « troubles passés » pour leur propre bien.

The market town was still the same as they remembered it was on their way to the border. People were not recognizing them. The three decided to eat something and entered a small tavern.

La ville marchande était toujours la même que celle dont ils se souvenaient lorsqu’ils se rendaient à la frontière. Les gens ne les reconnaissaient pas. Les trois amis décidèrent de manger quelque chose et entrèrent dans une petite taverne.

The old man entered the room. Old men and women were here. It was time to solve definitively and once for all these three cases : Aliénor, Aymon and Geraud.

Le vieil homme entra dans la pièce. Des hommes et des femmes âgés s’y trouvaient. Il était temps de résoudre définitivement et une fois pour toutes ces trois affaires : Aliénor, Aymon et Geraud.

Aliénor was the first of them to provoke the outrage of the community. Again, while involved with a man never chosen for her by the community, and after several provocations by him, she decided not to agree with him — again. What remained silent for years suddenly and unexpectedly broke out in the streets with the men’s parents and the old man violently arguing with her. Everyone around watched Aliénor totally frozen by the violence of the people in front of her.

Aliénor fut la première d’entre eux à provoquer l’indignation de la communauté. Une fois de plus, alors qu’elle était liée à un homme qui n’avait pas été choisi pour elle par la communauté, et après plusieurs provocations de sa part, elle décida de ne pas lui donner raison, encore une fois. Ce qui était resté silencieux pendant des années éclata soudainement et de manière inattendue dans les rues, les parents des hommes et le vieil homme se disputant violemment avec elle. Tout le monde autour regardait Aliénor, totalement paralysée par la violence des personnes qui se trouvaient devant elle.

Aymon was holding and kissing one of the two women at the edge of the woods. One woman of the village noticed the pair. The story was recounted to other women. Frustration and resentment was massive and extreme — How did he dare to meet someone else without our acceptance ?

Aymon tenait dans ses bras et embrassait l’une des deux femmes à l’orée de la forêt. Une femme du village remarqua le couple. L’histoire fut racontée à d’autres femmes. La frustration et le ressentiment étaient immenses et extrêmes : comment osait-il rencontrer quelqu’un d’autre sans notre accord ?

Geraud was leaving the old lady’s house quietly at night. He didn’t notice the three men watching him in the dark. Unbeknownst to him, the old lady was secretly a divorcee — “We are going to handle the matter” said the three men in the dark .

​​Geraud quittait discrètement la maison de la vieille dame pendant la nuit. Il ne remarqua pas les trois hommes qui l’observaient dans l’obscurité. À son insu, la vieille dame était secrètement divorcée. “Nous allons nous occuper de cette affaire” dirent les trois hommes dans le noir.

The old man was in deep trouble : how to condemn the three together ? The vicious idea came from a young girl : what about the dying old lady at the end of the village ?

Le vieil homme était dans une situation très difficile : comment condamner les trois ensemble ? L’idée cruelle vint d’une jeune fille : qu’en est-il de la vieille dame mourante au bout du village ?

The old man summoned Aliénor to the old lady’s house. The matter was urgent. Two other people summoned Geraud and Aymon.

Le vieil homme convoqua Aliénor chez la vieille dame. L’affaire était urgente. Deux autres personnes convoquèrent Géraud et Aymon.

The three were deeply surprised upon their arrival at the house. The old man asked them to enter immediately and quickly. Inside, the old lady was inanimate on a chair. People suddenly entered the room and the three were taken out with a bag on their heads.

Les trois furent profondément surpris à leur arrivée à la maison. Le vieil homme leur demanda d’entrer immédiatement et rapidement. À l’intérieur, la vieille dame était inanimée sur une chaise. Des gens entrèrent soudainement dans la pièce et les trois furent emmenés avec un sac sur la tête.

For days, they remained together in a dark jail. It was silent. Aliénor was sobbing. Geraud and Aymon talked a little bit and then stopped.

Pendant des jours, ils restèrent ensemble dans une prison obscure. Le silence régnait. Aliénor sanglotait. Géraud et Aymon discutèrent un peu, puis se turent.

Then, our three friends were taken out. The sun was hot outside. They were brought into the courtroom. The crowd was threatening : insults, stones thrown… They were aligned in front of the crowd forming an alley, the old man at the end of it alone.

Puis, nos trois amis furent emmenés dehors. Le soleil tapait fort. Ils furent conduits dans la salle d’audience. La foule était menaçante : insultes, jets de pierres… Ils furent alignés devant la foule qui formait une haie, le vieil homme seul à l’extrémité.

The old man started to speak slowly — Aliénor, for your concern and your well-being, present your excuse to the people here. Aymon and Geraud, you are not required to say anything, women of the community have already judged you.

Le vieil homme se mit à parler lentement : « Aliénor, pour ton bien et ton bien-être, présente tes excuses aux personnes présentes ici. Aymon et Geraud, vous n’avez rien à dire, les femmes de la communauté vous ont déjà jugés. »

Aliénor immediately fought back — What are we talking about ? I can’t bother anymore the men of this community. I despised their behaviors and hypocrisy. All of them are interested in a way or another… Alienor’s remark immediately created anger. The old man waved his hand in an attempt to stop the crowd, but it was too late — Did you believe that you are important and seducing ? Did you know what the men here said about you ? To marry Aliénor was not an honor — it was a sentence. Men and women started to laugh. Aliénor felt betrayed. How did they dare to laugh ? — I agree that it wasn’t easy and fair. I know that my attitude was harsh to many of them. But I guarantee that I appreciate a lot of them, and know a lot of them appreciate me too. Suddenly, for no reason, they lashed out.

Aliénor répliqua immédiatement : « De quoi parlons-nous ? Je ne peux plus supporter les hommes de cette communauté. Je méprise leurs comportements et leur hypocrisie. Tous sont intéressés d’une manière ou d’une autre… » La remarque d’Aliénor suscita immédiatement la colère. Le vieil homme fit un geste de la main pour tenter d’arrêter la foule, mais il était trop tard. « Tu croyais que tu étais importante et séduisante ? Tu savais ce que les hommes ici disaient de toi ? Épouser Aliénor n’était pas un honneur, c’était une condamnation. » Les hommes et les femmes se mirent à rire. Aliénor se sentait trahie. Comment osaient-ils rire ? — “ Je reconnais que cela n’a pas été facile ni équitable. Je sais que mon attitude a été dure envers beaucoup d’entre eux. Mais je vous assure que j’apprécie beaucoup d’entre eux, et je sais que beaucoup d’entre eux m’apprécient aussi.” Soudain, sans raison, ils se sont déchaînés.

Violence was extreme. Geraud was fearful and froze. Aliénor responded back to the crowd. Aymon was watching silently. The old man was laughing. At one point, soldiers entered the courtroom and the calm returned. The old man spoke — Aliénor, Geraud and Aymon : the community and I have decided to expel you from the country. For the well-being of us. Aliénor has pushed the limits of the community. Geraud and Aymon : women felt ashamed of what they did to you, and we are not willing to handle the consequences anymore. Two men betrayed in such a pitiful way is a shame. Sometimes, communities act against people for no reason. We can’t do anything to you Geraud and Aymon as you were just part of a game. We are freeing ourselves by expelling all of you. The honorable motive for us is the murder of the old lady.

La violence était extrême. Géraud était terrifié et paralysé. Aliénor répondit à la foule. Aymon observait en silence. Le vieil homme riait. À un moment donné, des soldats sont entrés dans la salle d’audience et le calme est revenu. Le vieil homme a pris la parole : “Aliénor, Geraud et Aymon, la communauté et moi-même avons décidé de vous expulser du pays. Pour notre bien-être à tous. Aliénor a dépassé les limites de la communauté. Geraud et Aymon, les femmes ont eu honte de ce qu’elles vous ont fait subir, et nous ne sommes plus disposés à en assumer les conséquences. Deux hommes trahis de manière si pitoyable, c’est une honte. Parfois, les communautés agissent contre des personnes sans raison. Nous ne pouvons rien vous faire, Geraud et Aymon, car vous n’étiez que des pions dans un jeu. Nous nous libérons en vous expulsant tous. Le motif honorable pour nous est le meurtre de la vieille dame.”

Aliénor, Aymon and Geraud stayed for a while in the jail. Aliénor was the most affected by the events the days before. After a few days, they were taken outside. They had to walk under guard at the end of the day. At the border, three figures were here — For the murder of an old lady, you are banished for a decade in this country, should you never return until at least eleven years. They moved silently and crossed the border.

Aliénor, Aymon et Geraud restèrent quelque temps en prison. Aliénor était la plus affectée par les événements des jours précédents. Au bout de quelques jours, ils furent conduits dehors. Ils durent marcher sous bonne garde jusqu’à la fin de la journée. À la frontière, trois silhouettes les attendaient : « Pour le meurtre d’une vieille dame, vous êtes bannis de ce pays pour une décennie et ne pourrez y revenir avant au moins onze ans. » Ils avancèrent en silence et franchirent la frontière.

At the local tavern, the three were speaking when someone came and brought them a small paper. The man left quickly. The text was curious and eerily strange. It reads as follow : 
“…A man, a woman and another man,
All making their own life at expenses of the rules,
Rules they didn’t know could exist,
One day it had to end,
For them to never return…”

À la taverne locale, les trois discutaient quand quelqu’un est venu leur apporter un petit papier. L’homme est reparti rapidement. Le texte était curieux et étrangement étrange. Il disait ceci :
« …Un homme, une femme et un autre homme,
Tous menant leur propre vie au mépris des règles,
Des règles dont ils ignoraient l’existence,
Un jour, cela devait prendre fin,
Pour qu’ils ne reviennent jamais… »

The three stayed puzzled for a moment, when they noticed two women at the other side of the tavern staring at them. They understood that they had to move. The three left the tavern. Then the market town. They walked slowly on the road, and never noticed the old man passing in the opposite direction…

Les trois restèrent perplexes pendant un moment, puis ils remarquèrent deux femmes de l’autre côté de la taverne qui les fixaient du regard. Ils comprirent qu’ils devaient partir. Les trois quittèrent la taverne. Puis la ville marchande. Ils marchèrent lentement sur la route, sans remarquer le vieil homme qui passait dans la direction opposée…
